Mrs. Grandt’s Message

Scarlett Grandt

It is an honor to be the new interim principal of HMLS. Having been the assistant principal at HMLS for the previous four years, I know there is no other school I would rather be leading. It is great to be a part of a community where students, teachers, and families care for each other and strive to build meaningful relationships that ensure inclusiveness and high levels of academic and social-emotional success for all students. I am privileged to be part of this amazing team to serve our Horace Mann family!

I am eager to continue our ongoing work to create a learning environment that is equitable, culturally responsive, and welcoming to all students. I am proud to work alongside our teachers to provide the best instruction to all students.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns. I, along with my team, welcome meaningful collaboration with all students, staff, and families throughout the school year.

I feel privileged to be part of this incredible community at HMLS. Thank you for your support and I look forward to working with you as we embark on another year of great accomplishments.

Welcome to the Horace Mann Laboratory School.

Through our intentional efforts, the HMLS community will ensure that every student will experience an inclusive, creative, supportive and academically rigorous environment where students develop a strong appreciation towards learning, self-reflection, independence and care for others, themselves and their communities.

We believe at HMLS we will be able to achieve this vision by embodying the following values:

Inclusivity

  • Every student and family are recognized and valued for who they are

Creativity:

  • Instruction is focused on project-based learning that honors every students’ unique abilities

Academic Rigor:

  • Students are supported to learn at high levels

Social Emotional and Physical Safety:

  • Community members build caring relationships among students and adults while focusing on social skills needed in school and in life.
  • Integrate SEL and Academic Learning through the school day
  • Student-centered discipline that teaches students self-management and self-discipline.

We are thrilled to be able to create a “home” where all HMLS community members can find purpose and meaning as well as a place where they are accepted, nurtured and challenged. That is the kind of school we are building and we hope you can join us in this amazing journey.
